On this page

Floatabs is a Chrome extension by MinaTeam that opens web pages in floating windows on top of the page you are viewing. This policy covers the Floatabs extension only; the MinaTeam Privacy Policy covers this website and our general approach.

Summary

  • Floatabs has no servers of its own. MinaTeam never receives your browsing data.
  • It uses no analytics, no ads and no tracking, and it does not sell or share your data.
  • The only thing it sends to a third party is the text you type in a floating window's address bar, to Google, to show search suggestions.

Data stored on your device

  • Windows and tabs — position, size, address, back/forward history, page title, favicon, zoom level, muted state and opacity — and recently closed windows and tabs (so you can reopen them). Stored in the extension's local storage (chrome.storage.local) on your device, separately for each website you are on. Windows you set to "Show on all sites" are stored once for all sites. When you close the last window on a site, that site's data is deleted.
  • Saved window sets (when you click Save, with the name you give them): stored in chrome.storage.local until you delete them.
  • Settings — the on/off switch, the sites where you turned the button off, the button's corner and "Mobile version of sites" — stored in chrome.storage.sync. Chrome syncs them through your Google Account if you use Chrome sync.
  • Bookmarks you save with the star button are real Chrome bookmarks in a "Floatabs" folder. Chrome manages and syncs them like any other bookmark. Floatabs only ever changes that folder.
  • Browsing history and bookmarks are read on your device to suggest addresses while you type. They are never transmitted.

Data that leaves your device

  • Address-bar text. What you type in a floating window's address bar is sent to Google's search suggestion service (suggestqueries.google.com), without cookies, to show suggestions. Google's handling of it is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
  • Pages you open. A page opened in a floating window loads directly from its website, as in normal browsing.
  • Page titles and icons. When you bookmark a page, Floatabs fetches that page once, without cookies, to read its title. To show a tab's icon, it fetches the icon from that website, without cookies. These requests only go to websites you opened.

Nothing else is transmitted.

Changes to pages shown in a floating window

Many websites refuse to be shown inside another page, which would leave the floating window blank. So, only in browser tabs where you opened a floating window, and only for frames inside the page (never the page itself), Floatabs:

  • removes the X-Frame-Options and Content-Security-Policy response headers;
  • marks frame requests as ordinary page loads (Sec-Fetch-Dest: document);
  • only if you turn on "Mobile version of sites": sends an Android phone User-Agent (same Chrome version) with matching Sec-CH-UA-Mobile and Sec-CH-UA-Platform hints, and lets the page in the floating window see the same user agent. Frames that the page you are on loads by itself are left unchanged.

These rules end when the tab closes. Find in page and muting run code packaged with the extension inside the floating window's page: matches are highlighted without changing the page's content, and nothing is transmitted.

Permissions and why they're needed

Permission Used for
Access to all sites (<all_urls>) Showing the button and floating windows on any page; loading the pages, titles and icons you open in a floating window
declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess The header changes described above, only in tabs with a floating window
webNavigation, scripting Following where the page in a floating window goes (address bar, back/forward), stopping a page load, find in page, mobile version of sites
contextMenus "Open link in floating window" when you right-click a link, and "Search for “…” in floating window" when you right-click selected text
history, bookmarks Address suggestions from your history and bookmarks; saving and opening bookmarks
storage Saving your windows, tabs, saved window sets and settings

Your choices

  • Turn Floatabs off everywhere, or only on one site, from its toolbar popup.
  • Close a site's windows to delete that site's stored windows; delete saved window sets from the button's menu.
  • Removing the extension deletes the data it stored on your device. Bookmarks in the "Floatabs" folder stay until you delete them in Chrome.

Changes to this policy

If Floatabs starts handling data differently, we will update this page. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
